Celtic wished ex-Liverpool and Swansea City boss Brendan Rodgers happy birthday and it backfired spectacularly

Scottish champions Celtic wished their former boss Brendan Rodgers happy birthday yesterday - then probably wished they hadn't.

It is common practice for clubs to send birthday wishes to ex-managers and players but it appears the Scottish side misjudged the situation a tad.

The former Swansea City and Liverpool was tremendously successful north of the border and was on the verge of sealing the triple-triple in Scotland before deciding to join Premier League outfit Leicester City last season.

His decision wasn't exactly well-received - and neither was Celtic's tweet wishing him all the best.

The tweet read: "Happy Birthday to Double Treble winning Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers" with images of the Northern Irishman holding the Scottish Cup and the open top bus parade.

At the time of writing, nearly 2,000 people have replied to the tweet, with many of the replies having been hidden.

Some, though, recognised what the 47-year-old did for the club despite his acrimonious exit.

Since moving to the King Power, Rodgers has improved the Foxes considerably, guiding them into third place in the Premier League behind former team Liverpool and Manchester City.
