Celtic wait on Moussa Dembele cash boost red alert as striker makes Manchester United decision

Former Celtic striker Moussa Dembele has his heart set on Manchester United as he prepares to leave Lyon this summer - according to a report.

The 23-year-old departed Parkhead for a return to France 18 months ago, and though the Hoops raked in as much as £20m, his value has only rocketed further since.

He has taken Ligue 1 by storm upon his return, scoring an exemplary 39 goals in 83 games to make a mockery of the nominal fee Celtic paid to sign him.

And as such, there has been no shortage of interest in his signature, with Chelsea and Manchester United among clubs thought to have made formal approaches for him in January.

Lyon weren't for letting their star man go then and were reported to have chased offers of up to £40m out the door, but it's expected that they will concede defeat and let him go when the window reopens in June.

And after it emerged last week that United had stepped up their efforts to recruit him, Sky Sports now say that the player wants a 'dream move' to Old Trafford.

They note that Champions League football could yet be a deciding factor with Dembele keen to play in Europe's premier club competition.

United have been handed a major boost in their efforts to qualify for the competition with Manchester City having been slapped with a European ban - meaning fifth place in the Premier League may be enough.

United currently sit in seventh, two points off Tottenham who occupy fifth place and three behind Chelsea one place higher.

Should he depart Stade de Lyon this summer Celtic will be due ten per cent of any fee as part of the deal that took him to France.

He has a £83m release clause in his contract but it's not expected United will have to pay all of that to secure his services.

It seems more realistic that a deal in the region of £60m could be in the works, pocketing the Hoops a cool £6m windfall.
