Celtic vs Rangers Sky Sports verdict delivered as Neil Doncaster responds to Nicola Sturgeon plea

Neil Doncaster has confirmed Celtic vs Rangers will not be made free-to-air on Sky Sports despite Nicola Sturgeon's plea with the broadcaster.

The First Minister urged Sky to make the game free of charge to avoid mass gatherings.

Supporters are restricted from meeting up in the pub or visiting a different household to watch the game on Saturday due to the current coronavirus guidelines.

Sturgeon said: "I really do strongly agree with Joan McAlpine and would encourage Sky Sports this weekend to make the Rangers vs Celtic match free to view for supporters.

"As a small but important contribution that they could make to help keep people safe right now.

"Enabling people to watch the match in the comfort and safety of their own home and reduce the temptation people who don't have access to pay-to-view services might have to go and watch the match somewhere else.

"So if anyone from Sky Sports is listening, I would encourage you to think about making the match free to view this weekend."

But SPFL chief executive Doncaster has confirmed the derby will only remain available to Sky customers.

He told BBC Sportsound: "It's unreasonable to ask Sky Sports to give up Scottish football's crown jewels."

Sturgeon also warned fans about travelling down south to places like Blackpool to watch the game in pubs.

Doncaster added on Go Radio: "There’s no need to do it, a lot of people have got a Sky Sports subscription."

"But even for those that haven’t you can get a Now TV day pass for under £10.

"That’s surely a much safer and certainly a much cheaper alternative than a day trip to Blackpool.

"So we certainly hope that as many fans as possible will enjoy the game - but in their own homes and not mixing with other households."
