Celtic vs Rangers showdown attracts huge audience as Premiership viewing figures soar

Scotland's top flight is attracting rocketing TV viewing figures with around one million tuning in around the UK for Sunday’s Old Firm blockbuster at Celtic Park.

Record Sport understands the bumper weekend audience for Celtic’s 2-1 win over Rangers was just marginally less than the record figures clocked when the Glasgow rivals met at Ibrox in December - when Sky Sports smashed through the million barrier.

And it has helped take the season on season increase in people watching Scottish football to a whopping 60 per cent.

A source said: “These figures are seriously strong and an indicator of the levels of interest in the Scottish game.

“There is no question that Steven Gerrard’s appointment at Rangers has had a lot do with it as he has such a high profile down south.

Celtic boss Neil Lennon reveals the things he wants to change about Brendan Rodgers’ side

“But, up until Sunday at least, we have also benefited from having a far more competitive Scottish top flight and that in itself has helped generate increased levels of interest.

“For a Scottish match to hit the one million mark is really quite impressive. That’s the same as the average numbers pulled in across the English Premier League so it shows that people believe our game is worth watching again.”
