Celtic vs Rangers at Sydney Super Cup 'in serious doubt' as trouble brews over controversial tournament

Celtic and Rangers ' trip Down Under later this year is in "serious doubt", according to a report.

The Premiership rivals were set to meet in the Sydney Super Cup in November but the exhibition tournament sparked fury among both fanbases.

The match would be the first time the two clubs have ever met outside of Scotland and the event has been billed as a homecoming for Parkhead boss Ange Postecoglou.

A-League sides Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers are also set to compete in the tournament, slated to kick off during the November break for the World Cup.

But a claim has emerged that the launch was "premature".

Sky Sports NZ journalist Jason Pine has stated there are ongoing issues with organisers that have not been resolved, putting the entire event under threat.

Pine wrote on Twitter: "Hearing football’s Sydney Super Cup may be in serious doubt. Unresolved issues with organiser escalating behind the scenes according to local sources. Launch may have been premature."

The Super Cup faced angry backlash from both Celtic and Rangers fans, with supporters staging protests at games following its announcement.

Ibrox commercial director James Bisgrove has defended the venture on financial grounds, insisting the club would earn more cash from competing in the friendlies than they would from an entire Premiership campaign.
