Celtic vs Hibs 'set' to kick off bumper SPFL fan return as Nicola Sturgeon primed to give full houses green light

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is reportedly set to green light the return of large outdoor events - paving the way for fans to flock back to football grounds from next week.

The return of capacity Premiership crowds could now begin with Celtic hosting Hibs on Monday January, 17 following the conclusion of the top-flight's winter break.

That would be followed by a near full card of fixtures - including Aberdeen vs Rangers - on Tuesday, January 18.

The traditional post-Christmas shutdown was brought forward in light of stadia being limited to 500 spectators from Boxing Day amid concern over the Omicron variant of Covid-19.

But BBC political editor Nick Eardley reports the latest Covid data has created grounds for optimism at Holyrood and that the FM is ready to signal the return of mass outdoor gatherings from next week.

Premiership clubs had voted in favour of shutting down early in a bid to ensure fans missed as little action as possible while restrictions were in place.

Boxing Day top-flight fixtures were played in front of minimal crowds before the league went into a three-week hibernation.

The Championship and below opted to continue playing with limited attendances.

Sturgeon is set to update parliament at around 2pm on Tuesday.
