Celtic v Rangers is 'litmus test' for society that pundit warns cannot be failed

Pat Bonner has warned that Celtic v Rangers next week will be a “litmus test” for society.

Numerous warnings have been issued to fans of both clubs not to descend on Celtic Park after thousands of Rangers fans took to the streets of Glasgow last weekend to celebrate their Scottish Premiership title win.

The Scottish Government hasn’t ruled out calling the game off if they don’t get assurances that mass gatherings won’t take place.

A ring of steel has been erected around Celtic Park to stop punters congregating outside the stadium.

Bonner understands the feeling amongst Gers supporters last weekend after they saw their team clinch a first league title in a decade.

But he’s argued that there’s no excuse for anyone to turn up next Sunday, two weeks on from that triumph, and insists this is a test for society that must not be failed.

He told BBC Sportsound: “You have to take emotion out of this. The emotion was there last week and I accept that.

“But this is two weeks on. People have got to realise that there are laws in this country that they have to abide by and they have to reflect next week on what that means to them as a person.

“This is a litmus test for society in this country. The game has to go ahead - it’s part of the fixture list - and the two clubs can make all the statement they want but the people themselves need to realise that this is a test for them and their responsibility.

“If we can’t deal with that in this society in this current climate, then there’s no hope for our country.”
