Celtic v Rangers fan return hopes dashed with Old Firm derby to be played behind closed doors

The first Old Firm derby of the season looks set to be played behind closed doors as plans to allow fans back to stadiums next month appear to be off the table.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirmed today that the proposed move to phase four of the Scottish Government route-map out of lockdown has been pushed back and won't be happening on October 5.

She told the Scottish Parliament: "It’s important that I indicate today that the route map changes with an indicative date of October 5 are unlikely now to go ahead on that timescale."

It was hoped that a small number of fans would be allowed into grounds next month as we move into the next phase, with strict social distancing measures in place.

However the spike in COVID-19 cases across Scotland initially cast doubt on that, and the latest restrictions make any prospects of a fan return in the near future highly unlikely.

Measures will be reviewed every three weeks.
