Celtic v Motherwell test event decision as Scottish Government knock-back early fan return

A proposal which would've seen a limited number of fans attend Celtic v Motherwell this weekend has been knocked back by the Scottish Government.

The Parkhead club wanted to use the home match against the Steelmen as a 'test event' with a small number of home supporters – around 1000 – granted entry to the stadium on Sunday.

However, according to BBC Scotland's Chris McLaughlin, the plans were refused during a meeting between the SPFL and Sports Minister Joe Fitzpatrick on Wednesday morning.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon previously said that football fans could return to stadiums across the country from September 14 in limited numbers, providing the amount of COVID-19 cases remains relatively small.

However test events will need to take place before this can happen, and the first of these will be on Friday when 700 rugby fans attend the Pro14 match between Edinburgh and Glasgow at BT Murrayfield.
