Celtic tussle required 'brave' Motherwell approach says Steelman as he vows to take out of position chance

Motherwell defender Jake Carroll says he enjoyed tussling with Celtic in an unfamiliar position.

Natural centre-backs Ricki Lamie, Sondre Solholm Johansen and Juhani Ojala were all injured for the Steelmen’s trip to Parkhead, meaning left-back Carroll had to fill in.

The Irishman put in a good shift as a Tom Rogic goal from David Turnbull’s set-play just before half-time secured a 1-0 home Premiership win.

Having not started a game since August, Carroll says it was nice to be back in the claret and amber fold.

He said: “I loved it. It’s been a while since I played there but I have played in that position before. I feel comfortable there and it’s a good ground to experience.

“I felt comfortable. Celtic didn’t have a natural striker so they were interchanging quite a lot. You always have to be aware and pick up your nearest man.

“David Turnbull drops into deep spaces and you have to be brave to go with him. It was different but I enjoyed it. I’m just happy to be playing as it’s frustrating for any player to be out the team.”

Motherwell hit the bar at Parkhead through Callum Slattery and Sean Goss was denied by a great save from Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart.

Carroll added: “Frustration is probably the biggest word. I thought we did quite well and we were dangerous. We hit the crossbar and had a couple of chances.

“The most frustrating thing is conceding right at the end of the first half. It’s not a good time to concede and it’s not a good goal to concede.

“So that is disappointing. I thought we could have (taken something).

"I thought we looked dangerous from set-pieces, so even late on, the boys were pushing on to be aggressive in their attacking play to try and nick a goal from a set-piece.”
