Celtic transfer news: Latest Alfie Doughty and Ben Davies developments

Celtic have reportedly made a fresh offer for highly-rated Charlton Athletic midfielder Alfie Doughty.

The 20-year-old is understood to have been identified as a top target by the Parkhead club.

And, according to the Herald and Times, Celtic have just had a bid of around £650,000 knocked-back by the League One club.

This is the second offer they've made for the player this summer. Addicks boss Lee Bowyer revealed earlier this month the Londoners had thrown out an initial bid from the Scottish champions.

The player is out of contract at the end of the season, and Celtic could potentially pick him up on a pre-contract should he fail to agree new terms with the club.

Celtic have also been linked with Preston North End defender Ben Davies throughout the summer window.

It was reported at the weekend that the Hoops would face stiff competition for the player as Championship side Bournemouth had made a £5million bid.

Meanwhile, Rangers are said to be keen on a move for Preston midfielder Daniel Johnson in recent days.

However owners' representative Peter Ridsdale shot down talk that any of their players were about to leave.

He wrote: "Ordinarily we don’t comment on transfer speculation, however, the last few days have been frustrating as it would appear that a number of clubs are attempting to do their bidding through the press and social media.

"Some of the so called ‘informed’ comments have claimed that transfer fees have been agreed between us and at least one other club for named players.

"At the time of writing this statement no bids for any of our players have been agreed. Any approaches that have been made have been underwhelming in both quantum and payment timescales.

"We have always accepted that buying and selling players is a normal part of our business, but at the right price.

"Some of the so called ‘informed’ comments on social media are not only unhelpful, but frankly not true.

"We attempt to conduct our transfer dealings club to club and only announce a deal once all parties have agreed.

"We have made bids for a number of players this summer but as deals were not finalised we have refrained from confirming the identity of potential targets. This will remain to be our approach.

"If and when there is anything definitive to say for either incomings or sales we will make a factual statement at that time."
