This piece of Celtic transfer news could spell trouble for Bristol City in their pursuit of Chelsea's Tomas Kalas

Celtic have been knocked back in their pursuit of a Scottish international in news that could spell trouble for Bristol City.

The Hoops have reportedly had a domestic record £5m bid rejected for Aberdeen defender Scott McKenna, and could now turn their attentions to Robins target Tomas Kalas.

The Chelsea centre-back enjoyed a successful loan at Ashton Gate last season and City are keen to sign him on a permanent basis, although they face stiff competition from the likes of Celtic, Rangers and Hull City.

Bristol Live understands the Robins are willing to make Kalas the highest paid player at the club if a deal can be agreed for the 26-year-old to return. A substantial carrot to tempt the 19-cap Czech Republic international with.

However, with Aberdeen holding out for £10m for 22-year-old McKenna - double Celtic's initial offer - the Scottish champions may be forced to look elsewhere, with Kalas an option according to the Scottish Sun.

They are also believed to be looking at Toulouse's Christopher Jullien.

Although they may struggle to match City financially, Celtic can offer Kalas Champions League football and almost guaranteed silverware north of the border.

They already appear to have beaten the Robins to the signing of 19-year-old Motherwell midfielder David Turnbull, pending an announcement.

The Glasgow side are in dire need of reinforcements in central defence following the departures of Dedryck Boyata, Mikael Lustig and loanee Filip Benkovic.

Boss Neil Lennon said yesterday: “It’s a priority area we’re looking to strengthen, no question. And we have a number of options that we’re running with at the minute.”

Meanwhile, left-back Kieran Tierney is being targeted by Premier League giants Arsenal.
