Celtic transfer news as Callum Styles hardline stance could shift signing focus elsewhere

Barnsley look set to play hardball over a potential exit for Callum Styles amid links with a move to Celtic.

Reports in England have claimed the Parkhead side are monitoring the status of the Championship defender in the January window.

The versatile left-side player has been a regular for The Tykes this season as they fight to avoid relegation to League One.

Having started his career as a left-back, Barnsley boss Poya Asbaghi has pushed the 21-year-old further forward into an attacking winger role.

But with so few options in defence, Asbaghi admitted he would be reluctant to let any key players leave in the winter window.

He told the Barnsley Chronicle : “In the end, we want to make room in the squad and it’s better to let go of players who aren’t playing not players who are playing.

“I will not go too deep into specifics on positions but I can say maybe left-back is not our biggest concern.”

Left-back has been a problem position for Ange Postecoglou so far this season with Josip Juranovic swapping from the right flank following an injury-plagued campaign for Greg Taylor.

The Australian is also reportedly keen to keep one forgotten defender on the Celtic Park books.

The Scotsman state that interest from the Premiership and English Championship for Osaze Urhoghide.

The centre-back has struggled for minutes in the first-team since his summer arrival from Sheffield Wednesday, with his only appearance coming in the Europa League dead rubber against Real Betis.

However, Celtic are only willing to allow the 21-year-old to leave on loan.

It follows the route of Liam Shaw, who is on the brink of completing a loan move to Motherwell until the end of the campaign after his arrival from the Owls.
