Celtic transfer latest as it emerges they were close to deal for Aston Villa star in January

Celtic were reportedly close to signing Aston Villa midfielder Jota in January.

According to the Athletic the Spanish playmaker turned down the offer to move to Parkhead earlier this year in order to fight for his place at Villa Park. Nottingham Forest and Fulham were also said to be keen to sign him.

He's struggled for game time at Villa with manager Dean Smith often preferring Jack Grealish, Anwar El Ghazi and Trezeguet in the creative areas.

The 29-year-old, who signed for the Premier League club last summer, has also previously been linked with a move to Rangers.

Former Ibrox boss Mark Warburton was reportedly keen on a deal to bring Jota to Glasgow in 2017 while he was playing for English Championship club Brentford.

Before joining Villa in 2019 he played for their local rivals Birmingham City in England's second tier.
