Celtic transfer latest as Filip Benkovic eyed by three Championship clubs

Celtic will likely face competition if they attempt to lure Filip Benkovic back to Glasgow.

Bristol City, Middlesbrough and Derby County are all said to be interested in the former Hoops loanee ahead of the transfer deadline.

Neil Lennon has left the door open for Benkovic to return after Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers said the Croat can leave on-loan if he signs a new centre half first.

Celtic have already explored the option of bringing in a centre-back this term, with former Cruzeiro defender Fabricio Bruno linked earlier in the window.

Benkovic would represent a more tried and tested option, and is a player in need of a game-time following an injury-hit spell.

Rodgers has promised him an opportunity elsewhere if he can find adequate cover, and his successful stint in Scotland last term could hold some sway.

Rodgers said: “We’re looking at options to support the squad between now and the end of the season, in a couple of positions and centre-half is one of the positions. I won’t go into names.

“We want to get Filip Benkovic out on loan to get some games and get that experience that he needs, but while doing that we need to make sure that for the remainder of the season that we’re covered and still have good strength.

“There will be a number of names thrown about but we won’t speak about them until they’re through the door.”

Meanwhile, Celtic youngster Jonathan Afolabi has joined Dunfermline on-loan for the rest of the season.

A summer signing following his release from Southampton, the striker has yet to make a competitive first-team appearance.

He will now soak up senior experience with the Pars until the end of this term.

Afolabi is not the only Lennoxtown prospect on the move.

Goalkeeper Conor Hazard, who has previously spent time on-loan with Falkirk and Partick Thistle, has agreed a short-term move to Dundee.

The 21-year-old will spend the rest of the season with James McPake's promotion hopefuls as they bid for a Premiership return.

Elsewhere, reports down south have linked Jeremie Frimpong with Southampton.

According to The Athletic, Saints are just one of a host of Premier League clubs who have watched the breakout right-back sensation.

The prospect of the Dutch teenager leaving Parkhead in January, however, is remote.
