Celtic transfer latest as Branimir Kalaica 'weighed up' but in-demand defender wanted by English pair

Celtic are weighing up a move for Benfica defender Branimir Kalaica - according to a report.

But they face stiff competition from Watford and English Premier League promotion hopefuls Leeds United.

The Hoops are on the lookout for a new centre back with Kristoffer Ajer and Christopher Jullien the only recognised senior defenders at the club.

Nir Bitton can also play there in a pinch but with Jozo Simunovic leaving, there's room for a new signing and Neil Lennon is running the rule over the Croatia U21 international - according to the Daily Mail

Kalaica has largely been playing for Benfica's B team in the second tier of Portuguese football but did score on his first team debut against Boavista in 2017.

He joined Benfica from Dinamo Zagreb in 2016 on a free transfer but is growing frustrated at the lack of first team opportunities at the Liga Nos outfit.

Kalaica played alongside Rangers defender Nikola Katic in the European U21 Championships last summer and the pair impressed against England and that has attracted from a clutch of clubs.

Meanwhile, the Hoops are also still on the lookout for a new keeper with Fraser Forster still their No. 1 target.

A move for the towering Southampton keeper looks unlikely at present after the Englishman knocked back another loan stay in Glasgow.

Greek stopper Vasilios Barkas is also on the list with AEK willing to sell him this summer for a fee of £5m. Joe Hart, David Marshall and Vaclav Hladky are other options for the Hoops.
