Celtic 'to announce Eddie Howe this week' following Bournemouth playoff exit

Celtic are thought to be on the brink of announcing Eddie Howe as the club's new manager - with reports claiming the Englishman will be unveiled as soon as this week.

Bournemouth's Championship playoff semi-final defeat on Saturday afternoon to Brentford looks to have paved the way for Howe's announcement, with several members of the Cherries staff thought to be wanted for the move to Glasgow, including coaches Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone.

Given their season is now over - and they've been consigned to playing in the second-tier for at least one more season - the Daily Record are reporting that Howe and the Celtic hierarchy are putting the finishing touches on their deal, with all roads leading to Parkhead.

Howe reportedly first met with Celtic owner Dermot Desmond over two months ago, with new chief executive Dominic McKay also thought to be close to revealing the club's new director of football following the departure of recruitment guru Nick Hammond.

Given the Hoops finished the Premiership campaign trophy-less for the first time since 2010, and a whopping 25 points behind bitter rivals Rangers, Howe's job can't begin soon enough, especially with the futures of stars Odsonne Edouard, Kristoffer Ajer, Ryan Christie and Leigh Griffiths all uncertain.

Moreover, with Champions League qualifiers beginning in July, and plenty of first-team reinforcements required, it remains to be seen whether or not Howe is the man to wrestle back bragging rights in Glasgow from Steven Gerrard's Gers.
