Celtic title latest as Italian chief insists European seasons could run until OCTOBER

Domestic seasons could run until OCTOBER according to the head of the Italian FA, as the SPFL prepares for a crunch meeting this week.

The coronavirus pandemic has seen football across Europe grind to a halt, with no indication on when it will be safe to resume.

Belgium have moved to declare Club Brugge champions based on the table as it stands, but threats from UEFA have seen a softening of that stance.

The European governing body is determined that the 2019-20 season should be finished and has warned leagues that declare the season early could see their teams barred from Europe.

The SPFL is believed to be considering declaring this season to be over in order to pay out much-needed prize money to clubs - a decision that would hand Celtic the title.

On Sunday night though the head of Italy's FA gave an indication of just how far they're willing to go to complete the season.

Gabriele Gravina was asked on Domenica Sportiva if the season could go into September or even October.

He replied: "It's an idea.

"It is a way to avoid compromising not only the 2019-20 season but also the 20-21 season by not being able to start with certainty, because we'd be subjected to an avalanche of challenges from everyone who thinks their rights and interests have been damaged.

"There would be a real risk that the only championship would be in the court rooms.

"The only sensible way to manage a serious emergency of this kind is that we need to finish the 2019-20 competitions this year.

"We are working on a whole series of hypotheses to better manage this situation.

"One hypothesised date is to restart on May 17 but we're aware - and let me underline it again - that it's only a hypothesis."
