Celtic target Enzo Maresca 'close' to Leicester City move

Celtic managerial candidate Enzo Maresca is “closing in” on a move to Leicester City as their new head coach, according to a new report.

The Manchester City first-team coach, who was at one point the favourite for the currently vacant job at Celtic Park, is close to a move to the English Championship side.

This is according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, who wrote: "Leicester City closing in on the appointment of Enzo Maresca as new head coach — talks at final stages, details are being discussed.

"Maresca, set to sign soon if all goes to plan as The Athletic first called.

"He’s prepared to leave Manchester City and Guardiola’s staff.”

The 43-year-old was first linked with the Celtic job in 2021 and was again speculated to be in the running for the position following Ange Postecoglou’s departure to Tottenham Hotspur last week.

However, that vacancy looks to be getting filled by Brendan Rodgers, as the Northern Irishman is set to return to the club following his dismissal by Leicester in April.

The 50-year-old won seven out of seven available trophies, including two Scottish Premierships, three League Cups and two Scottish Cups during his tenure.

His most recent managerial saw him win silverware in England such as  FA Cup and Community Shield in 2021, while also guiding Leicester to back-to-back fifth-place finishes. However, the club’s form dipped and Rodgers was dismissed, with Dean Smith appointed in his place.

Despite this change, Smith was unable to keep Leicester up and left the club following their relegation to the Championship in June.
