Celtic target David Turnbull won't be rushed back to the Motherwell starting line-up, says boss Stephen Robinson

Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson admits frustration at not being able to start striker David Turnbull in games, but has been warned not to.

The £3m Celtic target has played only a bit-part since returning to the squad from a lengthy lay-off following knee surgery, and Robinson admits he’s eager to get him back full-time - but will take advice.

“It has been too long,” said the Irishman. “I have to manage expectations, and I would start him right now, but I can’t.

“We’re under guidance from the specialist in London, so it has to be slow, unfortunately.

“The biggest thing is David Turnbull’s health, his future. Ultimately he will benefit Motherwell Football Club but we want him to be 100 per cent right.

Turnbull was a target for Celtic, but an injury problem flared up during his medical (Ross MacDonald/SNS Group)

“David looks perfect but we have to make sure we manage the load we put on him and we will do that.

“We’ll be guided by [physio] Davie Henderson, the specialist, and we’ll make sure we do the right things, as much as we all want a fit David Turnbull in our starting line-up.”

Robinson says Turnbull is already back to the standard he set before his injury prevented the big-money move to Parkhead.

He added:  “Every time I look round and Davie Henderson shakes his head at me! I’m looking round after five minutes, looking to put him on, but he reminds me that we can’t do that yet.

"David is a top footballer who would enhance any team when he’s fit, and whatever contribution he will make between now and the end of the season will be brilliant, but we won’t do anything cavalier or stupid with David.”
