Celtic superfan hands the Pope a club shirt during visit to the Vatican

A Celtic superfan has given the Pope a shirt with his name on it during a visit to the Vatican.

Popular Twitter user Paul the Tim was one of thousands of Celtic fans to ahead of the club’s Europa League tie against Lazio.

Several of the Hoops fans made the trip to the Vatican for morning mass held by Pope Francis on Wednesday.

Footage posted on Paul’s account shows one of his friends giving one of the Pope’s security guards the green and white hoops.

He captioned the video: “He got the strip - well security has passed it on.”

Paul the Tim is a big name among Celtic supporters and has amassed more than 49,000 followers on the social media website.

He often posts about his exploits while following the Glasgow club across the Europe and has been pictured with many Celtic stars.

The Twitter celeb was snapped alongside Jeremy Corbyn in Romania after the Labour leader took in the Hoops’ 1-1 UEFA Champions League draw with CFR Cluj earlier this year.

More than 9,000 fans are expected to be in the Italian city ahead of the club’s powder keg Europa League tie with Lazio in Rome on Thursday night.

Many of the travelling Celtic contingent have already taken in some of the Italian capital’s big attractions earlier today.

Celtic fans were advised by the Foreign Office not to wear their club colours while visiting the city after Celtic’s 2-1 win over Lazio in Glasgow.

Lazio fans were condemned for making fascist open handed salutes while marching through Glasgow city centre last month.
