Celtic suffer Hatem Abd Elhamed blow as defender is struck down on international duty

Celtic star Hatem Abd Elhamed has been struck down with a virus while on international duty and is set to miss Israel's next Euro 2020 qualifier.

The 28-year-old has been an important player for the Hoops this season and starred in both their Europa League games against Rennes and Cluj.

He played the full 90 minutes in Israel's 3-1 defeat in Austria on Friday and would have been a cert to start against Latvia tomorrow at home.

But Israel manager Andreas Herzog has revealed the Celtic star has been struck down with a mystery virus.

He said: "Hatem Abd Elhamed is sick and has been suffering from a virus. He's not trained and in fact hasn't even left the team hotel.

"He's not been able to eat with the rest of the group. Clearly, he's a major doubt for the game."

Meanwhile, Celtic tem mate Nir Bitton insists Israel shouldn't be criticised despite another poor campaign.

Israel are five points off automatic qualification with just three games left in their group.

But Bitton pointed out: "We haven't qualified for a tournament since 1970 so it's not exactly a new problem.

"It's going to take time before we qualify. But I think we have to be positive because we are getting closer all the time."
