Celtic suffer further Fraser Forster transfer blow with Southampton goalkeeper to get Liverpool chance

Former Celtic star Fraser Forster will get an opportunity to test himself in the English Premier League again after Alex McCarthy suffered a positive Covid-19 test.

The Englishman is still wanted by Celtic and they were unable to get him to Glasgow in the summer with Southampton wanting to keep him as back-up.

It was a blow to the Hoops who have struggled with their goalkeepers this season, with three different players taking the gloves in the first few months of the season.

Summer signing Vasilis Barkas has been heavily criticised after his £5m move, while Scott Bain and Conor Hazard have also been unable to hold down a regular place.

But Neil Lennon's men now been dealt a blow in their hopes to get him in January with Forster set to play against Liverpool on Monday night.

He's played second fiddle to McCarthy all season but the 31-year-old tested positive for Covid-19 over the weekend and Forster will step in to play against the Premier League leaders.

Liverpool travel to Southampton looking to extend their lead at the top but Ralph Hassenhuttl insists there's no fears with Forster.

He said: "I think Fraser is a very good alternative," he said. "He really wants to play now and was waiting for his chance.

"He has made a good development and, against a strong opponent, to make the debut of the season is not the worst for a goalkeeper I think, because you can immediately show up. I'm happy that he's here and we have this alternative."
