Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths avoids ban for 'stamp' during Hamilton game

Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths has avoided a two-match suspension following Sunday's incident with Hamilton's Sam Woods.

Griffiths clashed with Woods in an off the ball incident, in which the Scotland striker appeared to bring his foot down on his opponent’s chest as he lay on the deck.

Griffiths earned a yellow card from referee Nick Walsh after the early flashpoint at the Fountain of Youth Stadium, but the 29-year-old was left in a suspension sweat after the tangle was referred to the Scottish FA’s judicial panel.

And they have decided that Griffiths’ actions did not constitute the use of “excessive force and/or brutality” and has imposed with a two-match ban for violent conduct.

He’ll now be available for Celtic’s trip to Fir Park to face Motherwell tomorrow night as well as Sunday’s William Hill Scottish Cup fifth round encounter with Clyde.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon said: "I would be very disappointed, because I saw it at the time.

"I think his leg was trapped and he's trying to get up. I'm not sure how much contact he really made with the player.

"There was no malice in that, there's no intent in that at all, so I would be bewildered if anything came from that.

"What disappointed me was him pushing the player after it. We're big on discipline and I had a quiet word with him about it."

Hamilton boss Brian Rice was furious with the incident and said: "I don't think there is any debate it was a red card for Leigh Griffiths.

"There is no debate. But my opinion doesn't matter and the only person whose opinion matters is the referee and he called it the way he has seen it so we move on.

"He may look at it and say he made a mistake or he may look at it and say he got that right but in my humble opinion I don't think there is any debate."
