Celtic striker joins Accies Women's promotion push in 'coup' loan deal

Kathleen McGovern hopes to score the goals to fire Hamilton Accies Women to promotion into SWPL1.

The 18-year-old joined Gary Doctor’s side on loan from Celtic until the end of the season and McGovern’s addition is a major coup for Accies.

Hamilton face eight games in four weeks when they restart the SWPL2 season against Queen’s Park after a six month break.

Accies boss Doctor believes McGovern can be the catalyst for their promotion push and she is up for the challenge.

“I relish it [the expectation],” McGovern admitted. “Strikers are always under pressure to score goals, especially at a club like Celtic, but I’m just looking to do my best at Accies.

“That’s why I made the move. There is a goal at Accies and everybody knows that we are targeting promotion.

“I’ve been in a winning environment but I needed minutes and I felt the best option was to go out on loan. Their season is just kicking off while I’m returning from injury and I’m guaranteed to get minutes in my legs.

“I’m just looking to improve myself as a player, get my fitness up and hopefully I’m knocking on the door of the Celtic team when I return.”

McGovern’s goalscoring pedigree is unquestionable and she is a former Scotland youth international at under-19 level.

The Celtic loanee is one of the most talented young strikers in the country and she was prolific before sustaining an injury which she returned from last month.

It was a whirlwind 24 hours for the striker before she joined Accies after featuring for Celtic.

McGovern explained: “We were in talks for about a week and we were in a rush to get it completed on Thursday with the deadline.

“It happened so quickly because I was on the bench against Hibernian for Celtic on Wednesday night.

“It was a really quick turnaround because I met Gary on the Thursday morning, agreed to sign, then I was in with Hamilton on the Thursday night – it all happened so fast.

“I actually played against Celtic that night in a friendly match and then Sunday was a training game so I’ve only really played games with the team so far.”

Accies boss Doctor is delighted to have signed McGovern and he hopes she can fire Hamilton to glory.

He said: “Hopefully bringing in Kathleen will provide us with that extra bit of firepower up front and she can score goals.

“We are really grateful to Celtic for making that happen.”
