Celtic store stocking 'Glasgow' jersey sparks social media meltdown as retro shirt bears striking Rangers resemblance

A retro shirt bearing a striking resemblance to a classic Rangers design from the 90s?

No big deal - except when it appears on the Celtic website.

Hard to fathom, yes, but that was the scenario that sent both sides of Scottish football's biggest rivals into social media meltdown on Wednesday morning.

It began with Celtic supporters noticing that an Adidas shirt "Glasgow" had appeared on their club's official online store.

The jersey is part of a wider collection produced by the sportswear giant to coincide with Euro 2020 kicking off. Each shirt commemorates a host city with Glasgow obviously being one.

Its similarity to an old Rangers effort from 1992/93 was enough to cause a stir, never mind the fact it'd gone on sale for £55 and with a a huge '10' emblazoned across the front.

Anybody whose paid even the slightest bit of attention to Scottish football over the past few years will attest that both those numbers have carried a certain significance.

Needless to say, some Celtic fans weren't too chuffed in a week where the club's pursuit of top managerial target Eddie Howe dramatically collapsed.

@PolskaBhoy said: "What the hell is this being sold on the official Celtic superstore website??? Is this what they want us to spend our vouchers on???"

Predictably, the reaction on the other half of the city was gleeful.

It included a number of five star reviews on the official Celtic store before the shirt appeared to be removed and replaced with the "Dublin" version.

Here's just a small selection...

"Bought this for my grandkids who are running about pretending they're Ian Durrant. The future of our club is in great hands."

"I love this new top. I've been wanting to transition into a bluenose for some time as I've never felt comfortable in green and white. I want to join the party after all! #55"

"I bought this for my pal Terry who's had a terrible year, I had his custom made with the number 8 & 3/4 and the name Munro on the back. The colour is lovely, reminds me of the ocean which is great cos I love sharks."

"5 stars for the the champs. Very good price #oldfirm"
