Celtic star Scott Brown pays tribute to 'beautiful' fan who lost breast cancer battle

Celtic captain Scott Brown has paid tribute to a Hoops superfan who lost her battle with breast cancer at the weekend.

Laura Cunningham, 32, passed away in her sleep on Saturday, June 6, after putting up a "tough and heroic" fight against an aggressive form of the disease.

Hailed as "the life and soul of the party" with an "infectious laugh", Laura was a well-known face on the Celtic circuit.

She had a ball when she was invited to Parkhead for a meet and greet with her first team heroes last summer.

Social media has been flooded with tributes and last night Celtic captain Scott Brown sent his own words of support to Laura's heartbroken friends and family.

The 34-year-old lost his younger sister Fiona to skin cancer in 2008.

He said: "My sincere condolences to all of you.

"Laura will be looking down on all of her friends and family."

Laura, from East Kilbride, documented her health battle on social media in a series of honest posts about her condition.

The popular optician, who was admitted to St Andrews Hospice in Airdrie at the end of April, gained a large following of supporters - dubbed ‘Laura’s Army’.

Tributes have continued to pour in from across social media.

Ethel Gardner said: "Laura knew Scott Brown understands and shared her pain and that’s what makes him my hero too!"

Another fan said: "God bless her and her family fly high."

One added: "Rip Laura your laugh was so infectious you’ll be sadly missed."

One said: "That’s very sad. RIP. Such a lovely young lady. So glad she got to meet Broonie. So sorry for her family and friends.

Another added: "Fly high beautiful ghirl."

Rangers fans also paid their respects to Laura, and Celtic skipper Scott for his tribute.

AndyboyRangers said: "Thoughts with the family and respect to Scott brown for making her dream come true RIP."

Laura was over the moon when she met manager Neil Lennon and James Forrest (LisaMarie Rankin/FB)

Another added: "Class that, I might be a Rangers fan but it has to be said you do a lot for your fans and charity, can only respect that, and I really think that goes under the radar sometimes in Scotland just how much players do in that regard."
