Celtic star receives Scotland under-21 call-up

Stephen Welsh has been called-up to the Scotland Under-21 squad for the double header against Northern Ireland.

The Coatbridge star has impressed for Celtic this season and his performances have been recognised by Scot Gemmill.

The 21 year-old has made 21 appearances for Celtic this season as he's emerged as a first-team regular and he signed a new four-year deal in April.

Fellow Coatbridge star Josh McPake has also been called-up to the squad after the Rangers winger impressed on loan at Harrogate Town.

Welsh grabbed his first goal for his boyhood club in a 2-1 win against Motherwell at Celtic Park in January.

The centre-back has played at every youth age group for Scotland but he will make his under-21 debut against Northern Ireland if selected.

It's the first time that Gemmill's squad have played in six months and only three players - Brian Kinnear, Lewis Mayo and Glenn Middelton - remain from October's squad.

Both matches against Northern Ireland will take place at Dumbarton's stadium on Wednesday, June 2 and Saturday, June 5.
