Celtic star opens up on World Cup snub and no contact from national boss

Arne Engels has admitted a disappointment at missing out on Belgium's World Cup squad, but vowed to win his spot back in the future.

The £11 million Celtic midfielder has four caps for his country, all coming in the Nations League in 2024 and he hasn't made a squad since playing 90 minutes in a defeat to Israel.

After returning from injury to play a big part in Celtic's late charge towards the title, he was hoping to win a spot on the plane to North America.

And he's admitted to having no contact from boss Rudi Garcia about his exclusion, but is backing the Red Devils to go far.

Engels told Sporza: "It's a shame. You always want to be there to represent your country, especially at a major tournament. It is now up to me to show that I am worthy of being part of it.

"Hopefully, I will get a chance in the future to fight my way back in.

"I have actually never had contact with him (Garcia). Although I do think that is the custom. That is probably the case with the important players.

"And as I said, it is up to me to prove myself and seize every opportunity with both hands. There are new chances in September. But first, I think the Red Devils are going to have a fantastic tournament."

Engels also reflected on a tough season at club level which ultimately ended with success, and talked up the impact of Martin O'Neill.

"It was a tough season for us", he added. "Everyone had basically written us off.

"But we did everything we could to still win the title. That makes it all the more special to be able to do it at home in front of our own fans.

"In the playoffs (post split games), the fans really gave us an extra boost. Thanks to that magical atmosphere, we were able to do something extra. That certainly helped us during the difficult moments.

"He (O'Neill) and his staff have provided calm, structure, and a good vibe.

"I can only say positive things about him. I have no words for what he has done for us and the club. He is a very special man."
