Celtic star named in Scotland starting XI as Steve Clarke names team for Austria clash

Steve Clarke has named his team for Scotland's World Cup qualifying clash with Austria at Hampden - and there is a healthy Celtic contingent among the starting XI.

The Tartan Army booked a heroic return from the international tournament wilderness late last year when David Marshall saved from Aleksandar Mitrović to clinch a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Serbia in Belgrade, booking a place at this summer's European Championships.

Scotland may have to wait a little bit longer for their World Cup return, but would dearly love to be on the plane to Qatar in 2022 - a full 24 years after they last participated at football's showpiece event.

Ryan Christie was the goalscorer for Scotland at the Rjko Mitic Stadium in November and is handed a start alongside loan defender Jack Hendry.

The centre half has impressed on loan at KV Oostende in Belgium and earns a start for the national side for the first time since 2018.

Meanwhile, former Celtic trio David Marshall, Stuart Armstrong and Kieran Tierney are also in the starting XI.

Rangers midfielder Ryan Jack was forced to pull out of the squad with an injury after helping the Ibrox side to the Premiership title, but goalkeeper Jon McLaughlin is among the subs.

The visitors have been able to name a strong squad after restrictions were lifted on their Bundesliga group travelling to Scotland for the game.

Bayern Munich’s David Alaba and RB Leipzig’s Marcel Sabitzer start for Franco Foda’s side, while rangy forward Ercan Kara arrives with a fearsome scoring record in his homeland.
