Celtic star misses out on Scotland cap-call for World Cup qualifiers

Scotland boss Steve Clarke says Celtic star David Turnbull missed out on a Scotland squad place because midfield is already strong in the 26-man squad.

Clarke today unveiled his squad for Scotland's opening World Cup qualifiers against Austria, Israel and the Faroe Islands, with many expecting Turnbull to be included in his first senior squad.

However, Stuart Armstrong, Ryan Christie, John Fleck, Ryan Jack, John McGinn, Callum McGregor, Kenny McLean and Scott McTominay were instead given the nod.

Wishaw boy Turnbull has been a stand-out since moving from Motherwell to Celtic in August, and it was widely felt that he would be rewarded with a step-up from uinder-21 football.

However, Clarke told Sky Sports: "I think when you look at the players we've got up there in midfield, midfield is a really strong area.

"David's a good player, got into the Celtic team, did really well and is certainly one for the future and one to keep an eye out for."

Scotland welcome Austria to Hampden on Thursday, March 25 before visiting Israel three days later and hosting the Faroe Islands on Wednesday, March 31.
