Celtic star Kieran Tierney should be Manchester United's top transfer target reckons Frank McAvennie

Celtic legend Frank McAvennie reckons Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should try to snap up Kieran Tierney for Manchester United.

McAvennie insists the Hoops kid is superior to United’s £30million England left-back Luke Shaw.

The former striker is not certain the 21-year-old Celtic diehard will want to leave Parkhead until they’ve wrapped up their bid for 10 in a row.

But he insists Tierney would blossom in a bigger league.

Neil Lennon’s side continue their bid to secure a treble Treble, with Aberdeen their opponents in a Scottish Cup semi-final.

And McAvennie said: “Kieran is a big Celtic fan and I’d love to see him stay for 10-in-a-row – but he’s a wonderful player and deserves to play in the best league in the world.

“He’ll be looking at other players on massive money but he’s only young and he’ll get that money in a couple of years.

“He’s guaranteed a first-team spot at Celtic as well as the Champions League and he’d walk away with all those titles under his belt.

“I was 25 when I went to West Ham so I was savvy enough. Tierney will be a wonderful player.”

McAvennie argues that the cash and opportunities for major silverware elsewhere will lure him away from Paradise eventually.

He said: “The boy’s head will be turned. He will look at Andy Robertson, another Scottish left-back, in a Champions League Final.

“It’s a toss-up between them who is better.

“If Tierney goes to England he will improve as he’ll be playing every week against the best players.

“He could go to Manchester United and be a great replacement for Shaw – it’s the worst defence I’ve seen in a United strip for years.

“Getting Tierney would be a great start to rebuilding. He’s better than Shaw now. In two years’ time...”

McAvennie believes the only club which can stop Celtic reaching 10 in a row is themselves – if the board don’t back the manager.

He said: “I’d like to see Celtic flinging money at getting the job done over the next two years. Give them quality players, get it done.”
