Celtic star Kieran Tierney's selfless act that proves he's a real throwback

Aside from Odsonne Edouard's late, late winner, little else about Celtic 's visit to Dundee before the international break will live long in the memory.

Except if you're Jonny Hayes.

The winger has made an observation about Kieran Tierney that just about sums up the full-back.

A local lad playing for his boyhood heroes, the all-action style, even the persistence with short sleeves when temperatures are plummeting - everything about Tierney is reminiscent of a supposedly bygone era.

As Neil Lennon 's side were piling forward in search of the goal that put them 10 points clear the Premiership summit, Hayes described Tierney as being like that one playground footballer (and there was never more than one) who held the fort in defence while everyone else went in search of glory.

And then there was his injury return against Motherwell where Hayes reckons he looked gutted at the prospect of being taken off as a precaution.

Tierney appears to have paid for his exploits at Dens Park as he picked up an injury that kept him out of Scotland's Euro 2020 qualifying double header, and it's unclear whether he'll be fit to face Rangers at the weekend.

Hayes is praying the 21-year-old gets the rest he deserves ahead of the Parkhead showdown.

Hayes has heaped praise on Tierney (SNS Group)

He told the Celtic View: "He's the type of guy who gives you 100 per cent every time.

"He came back into the team for the Motherwell game and I could tell he didn't want to come off.

"He wants to play every minute of every game. He has great desire and hunger.

Rangers star Scott Arfield warned he'll live to regret his 'Broony' taunt against Celtic

"At the end of that game against Dundee he was the last man back doing all the defending.

"He's going to be a bit tired coming back in and playing every game. Hopefully his injury's not too serious and he gets a proper rest before this upcoming game."
