Celtic star David Turnbull's former school will watch Scotland clash as pupils and staff support local hero

Pupils at Celtic and Scotland star David Turnbull's former school WILL get to watch Monday's Euro 2020 match with Czech Republic.

The head teacher at Coltness High School in Wishaw, John McGilp, has confirmed youngsters will have the opportunity to watch the match in their classrooms, with social distancing measures in place.

SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell has written to the Scottish Government urging them to allows schools across the nation the opportunity to watch tomorrow's clash with Czech Republic at Hampden Park, which marks Scotland's first appearance at a major tournament for 23 years.

The clash kicks-off at 2pm when most pupils will be in class and not all schools across the country are set to screen the match.

However, when Lanarkshire Live Sport dropped by the ex-Motherwell midfielder's former stomping ground a few days ago to get a sense of the football fever gripping the school, the head teacher had some good news for pupils.

Mr McGilp said: "What we'd have normally done is show the game in the theatre and put it on the large screen for 300 individuals in there.

"Unfortunately, in the current circumstances that's not something we are able to do.

"What we've done is said to staff that, if pupils want to watch the game in period six and seven on Monday, they are able to do so.

"We are obviously aware that pupils have been off for a great length of time due to Covid and learning from home, but I think it's just such a historic event - it's the first time since 1998 that Scotland have been in an international tournament, so we are also aware of that.

"There's members of staff who can't remember Scotland being in an international tournament, so if they feel that they have the ability within their coursework to watch the game, then by all means do that.

"Not only for David, but for the country in general."
