Celtic star David Turnbull identifies Lille turning point after Motherwell switch

Wishaw ace David Turnbull admits he worried when his time would come at Celtic after a stop-start initiation at Parkhead.

But the former Motherwell midfielder says his Europa League display against Lille was the turning point that sparked an outstanding season for him individually, even if things did go awry for the Hoops in their 10-in-a-row bid.

Turnbull netted the winner in a five-goal thriller against the French side in December and since then he's been a mainstay in the side, with his displays attracting major calls for him to be included in Scotland's Euro 2020 squad for this summer.

And reflecting on his time at Parkhead so far, he told CelticTV: “I’m loving it. Ever since making my first start for the club [in Europe] against Lille I’ve not looked back.

“I’ve loved every minute of it and I just want to continue doing that, keep impressing everybody.

“I did notice things turning for me. It was obviously a tough few months before that when I was in and out of the team.

“I knew I just had to bide my time as it is a strong squad, but once I played that Lille game, I loved it and wanted to keep my spot in the team and kick on from there."

The 21-year-old had made 28 appearances for the Hoops since his £3million switch from the Steelmen in August, netting seven times.

And he added: "My confidence is high at the minute. I just want to keep creating and scoring as many goals as I can, help the team out and show the fans what I can do.

“Since I’ve started playing, even at Motherwell, I wanted to base my game on goals.

"A goalscoring midfielder can be hard to come by so I’m just trying to add that to my game every week.

“Wherever I’m put in, whether it’s the 10 role, deeper or out wide I enjoy doing it.

“It’s been great to see all the reaction to me on social media.

"I just want to repay the fans for the way they've cheered me on - I can’t thank them enough.”

Turnbull was a surprise omission from Steve Clarke's latest squad that picked up draws with Austria and Israel last week, and beat Faroe Islands 4-0 last night.

But he is set to return to the field this weekend when Celtic face Falkirk in the third round of the Scottish Cup on Saturday night. Kick-off is 7:30pm at Celtic Park.
