Celtic snap up Scunthorpe striker as promising teenage goalkeeper pens new contract

Celtic have snapped up Scunthorpe United striker Joey Dawson on a three-year deal, as well as securing exciting academy goalkeeper Tobi Oluwayemi to new terms.

The news comes in the same week midfielder Liam Shaw was paraded at Parkhead after agreeing a four-year deal with the Hoops following his move on a free transfer from Sheffield Wednesday.

Dawson moves to Glasgow from the English League Two side and follows in the footsteps of Gary Hooper, who proved to be a massive hit after joining from The Irons back in 2010.

Dawson, 18, had been with Scunthorpe since he was just eight-years-old, and departs Glanford Park after making history by becoming their youngest ever player at just 16 years and 75 days old.

Arsenal were rumoured to be interested in his services following his breakthrough and he'll join up with Celtic's reserve side in the Lowland League for the forthcoming campaign.

Speaking after the move to Celtic TV, Dawson was delighted to have gotten it over the line, he said: “I feel a bit overwhelmed. Looking around the stadium, you can sense the magnitude of the club and it is one of the biggest clubs in Europe without a doubt.

"After seeing the facilities and meeting the people, it is an honour to be here and I am looking forward to getting started now.

"One thing that enticed me after talking to Chris McCart, Willie McStay and Tommy McIntyre was the winning mentality of this club and it is something I want to be a part of.”

Dawson will be joined in the reserve side next season by goalie Tobi Oluwayemi.

The 18-year-old English-Nigerian stopper has put pen to paper on a two-year extension to his current deal that will see him remain in Glasgow until the summer of 2024.

He joined the club from Tottenham Hotspur's youth academy in 2019 and was a regular feature in Celtic’s under-19 side and reserve squads last season.

Oluwayemi is highly regarded at Lennoxtown and he has caught the eye at international level for England.

Earlier this year he made his England Under-18 debut after previously making appearances for their Under-16 and 17 sides and will continue his development in the reserves next season.
