Celtic set for Champions League safety net while Rangers face disadvantage

Celtic look set for an easier route into the Champions League group stages next season, whilst Rangers are facing a disadvantage - despite battering their Glasgow rivals in the Premiership title race.

Steven Gerrard 's side finished a whopping 25 points ahead of the Hoops to win their first top-flight championship in a decade, and are eyeing a first campaign in Europe's elite competition since 2008.

And having been crowned champions of Scotland, the Gers will enter the qualifying stages at the penultimate third round, with Celtic entering a stage earlier in the second round.

However, should Celtic get through that two-legged tie they'll be guaranteed a place in the Europa League group stages, even if they go on to lose in the third round of the Champions League qualifiers.

Rangers, on the other hand, would be forced to negotiate a tricky tie in the Europa playoff round, should they fail to get past the Champions League third round.

Celtic will discover their first European opponents of next season in the Champions League second qualifying round on June 15 or 16, with games due to be played on July 20 and 27, and could be pitted against the likes of Turkish giants Galatasaray.

Rangers will find out who they'll be facing when the draw for the Champions League third qualifying round takes place on July 19, with ties played on August 3 and 10.
