Celtic's 'world first' claim queried by Gibraltar minnows as Lincoln Red Imps argue for quintuple treble

Celtic might just be a wee bit sick of the sight of Lincoln Red Imps after recent years.

A 1-0 defeat to the Gibraltarian minnows in Brendan Rodgers first game in charge of the club back in 2016 might have been turned over a week later, but it is still a bit of a sticking point.

Now they're back frustrating Celtic after the club's post on Twitter which suggested their quadruple treble was the first one ever achieved in world football.

The historic run was completed with a penalty win over Hearts in the Scottish Cup Final on Saturday, and it means they've won 12 of the last 12 trophies.

That led to the club putting billboards up claiming it as a 'world first' and also tweeted: “A world first.

“The #QuadrupleTreble winners, Celtic Football Club.”

But Red Imps took to Twitter themselves to issue their own claim on the world record.

They tweeted to say “Hold my beer.

“The #QuintupleTreble - 2003/04, 2004/05, 2005/06, 2006/07 and 2007/08."

Red Imps won the Gibraltar Football League, the Rock Cup and the Gibraltar League Senior Cup for five consecutive seasons.

During that time, they also won the Pepe Reyes Cup on four occasions.

There is the caveat that Gibraltar football wasn’t recognised as an official league until 2014 when they became members of UEFA.

In the past, the league has been largely amateur.
