Celtic's treatment of Craig Gordon is shameful and veteran keeper is better than Fraser Forster - Hotline

Craig Gordon hit out at Celtic’s handling of his contract renegotiations and the Invincible Hoops keeper’s comments split opinion on the Hotline.

Gordon could now return to former club Hearts after knocking back a deal from St Mirren and a reported 80 per cent cut offered by the Parkhead club.

The 37-year-old has proved to be a great piece of business after Celtic landed him for free as he battled back from a career-threatening injury to sign for Ronny Deila.

That was six years ago and he went on to establish himself as first choise despite briefly losing his place to Dorus de Vries under Brendan Rodgers and then again to Fraser Forster last season.

Gordon was also denied the chance of a move to Chelsea three years ago and Jimmy Murray, Edinburgh, said: “Celtic’s treatment of Craig Gordon is shameful.

“He has been a fantastic player for the club - a real goalkeeper and not just a shot-stopper. His game took a slight dip under Brendan Rodgers when he tried to turn him into a centre half.

“But Fraser Forster has no control whatsoever over his penalty box and flaps whenever a corner kick or cross comes anywhere near his six-yard box.”

But Gordon Ashley, Ayr, said: “Who does Craig Gordon think he is moaning about Celtic’s offer when he is a 37-year-old back-up keeper?

“He was never going to get anywhere near the wages he was previously on but I bet the new offer would still be double what Hearts are offering and the chance to be part of 10 in A Row.”

10 In A Row? Not in the eyes of John Stewart, Newton Mearns, who had his tongue in his cheek when he said: “In order to stop Nine In A Row this season Rangers don't just need good footballers but also nasty players who are not afraid to leave the boot in.

“They need players who refuse to accept refereeing decisions when they are clearly wrong and who will put pressure on officials and who aren’t afraid to go face to face with other teams.

“I apologise for using a bit of poetic license in stating Nine In A Row as it's really only five considering four of Celtic’s titles wins came for coming first in a one-horse race.”

How Steven Gerrard would love a modern-day Davie Cooper for next season’s title tilt and the late wing king was featured in the latest of our icons series.

Alan McGaw, Alloa, said: “What a fantastic tribute by David McCarthy on the late Davie Cooper as part of Record Sport’s icons series.

“He was my hero playing at Ibrox and I remember THAT Drybrough Cup final goal and the rocket shot against Aberdeen at Hampden.

“He was Mr Moody Blue but what a player loved by all supporters.”

Robbie Neilson’s shock appointment as Hearts boss after leaving Dundee United continues to dominate headlines with Tangerines sporting director Tony Ashgar claiming it was a sideways step.

Despite leading the Taysiders to promotion, Ronald Swan, Lochee, said: “No Arab should be sad to see the back of Robbie Neilson.

“I didn’t want him in the first place as his tactics are negative beyond belief and his signings an absolute disgrace.

“Without any sour grapes, it’s good riddance and I’d like Jim McIntyre and Billy Dodds next please.”

Paul McCormack, Coatbridge, said: “There’s a lot of strange stuff going on in Scottish football and none more so than Robbie Neilson going back to Hearts.

“Leaving Dundee United, back in the top league, who are bidding for players to strengthen for a team we will see in court before we see them on the park is almost as strange as his decision to leave Tynecastle for MK Dons in the first place.”

The Jambos could yet replace United in the top flight if they win their legal fight and Ally McRobbie, Dundee, said: “If United, Raith and Cove are successful in court how can Celtic still be crowned champions? Surely the same logic must apply.”

Brian Smith emailed: “ Neil Doncaster keeps on insisting he and his committee are only their to carry out the wishes of the 42 members clubs.

“If that is the case why is he being paid such a substantial salary only to be a yes man? Surely it’s his job to properly advise the clubs of the implications of their actions and if this had been done to even a minimal standard we wouldn’t be in the ridiculous situation we are now.

“The whole thing is a shambles. Those who voted to end the season early and then chucked out reconstruction should be totally ashamed of themselves.”
