Celtic's Leigh Griffiths cleared of 'stamp' on Hamilton defender

Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths has avoided a two-match suspension for his alleged 'stamp' on Hamilton's Sam Woods.

Griffiths was involved in a flashpoint 13 minutes into the Premiership match against the Scottish champions at the Fountain of Youth Stadium on Sunday.

Hamilton led 1-0 through Marios Ogkmpoe, but a foul on Griffiths by Jamie Hamilton led to the young defender being sent off and Odsonne Edouard scored from the free kick. Celtic eventually won 4-1, stretching their lead over Rangers at the top of the league to seven points.

Hamilton boss Brian Rice and several pundits felt the Scotland striker should have been red-carded for the incident with Woods, and Griffiths and Hamilton's Alex Gogic were both booked for squaring up after the flare-up.

Griffiths appeared to bring his foot down on Woods' chest as he lay on the turf, and the incident was referred to the Scottish FA's judicial panel, but they decided that the striker's actions did not constitute the use of “excessive force and/or brutality” which would have resulted in a two-match ban for violent conduct.

He’ll now be available for Celtic’s trip to Fir Park to face Motherwell tomorrow night (Wednesday) as well as Sunday’s William Hill Scottish Cup fifth round encounter with Clyde.
