Celtic's Jonny Hayes hits back at Rangers fan over Mikael Lustig comment

Jonny Hayes has hit back at a Rangers fan over a comment he made about Mikael Lustig.

Irish footballer Hayes defended his Celtic teammate, who has won 16 trophies in seven season at the Scottish club.

The Sweden international's contract is coming to an end and, if his comments on Tuesday are anything to go by, his time at the club is up, reports The Daily Record.

Lustig posted a video montage of his own best bits on Instagram later in the day, with supporters and players piling into the comments with messages of thank.

But this is Scottish football after all and anything involving one half of Glasgow's big two inevitably attracts the other.

One Rangers fan wrote: "You will be missed. What a servant you were to us."

It was presumably a comment aimed at Lustig's perceived decline over the past few seasons and obviously wasn't well received by the Hoops faithful.

Or by Hayes.

The Irishman wrote: "Yeah you've done well with all them trophies since he arrived..."

Hayes and Lustig have often been pictured together during their time at the club and appear to be the best of mates.

But all signs point to the right-back heading elsewhere before the transfer window is over, although he hasn't completely closed the door on staying.

He said: "The last few weeks have been tough. Not on the field, but off the pitch.

“I am proud of how I have handled the situation and those closest to me, the players and the leaders at Celtic know what has happened.

“It could have been handled differently, in terms of what has been said and what happened.

"You should never say never. I love Celtic and never thought I would feel such a connection to a club.

"I would never close that door. For me, that club is the fans and the job the players do for them. I have nothing but good things to say about Celtic.”
