Celtic's Declan Gallagher bid 'questionable' warns former Hoops star Scott McDonald

Declan Gallagher may not be the man to take Celtic 'to the next level' according to former Parkhead favourite Scott McDonald.

The Motherwell and Scotland stopper has been linked with a move to Neil Lennon's side as a replacement for Shane Duffy after the on-loan Brighton man's struggles so far this campaign.

The 29-year-old was released by his boyhood heroes as a youngster without making a first team appearance and was forced to work his way back to the top flight via Clyde, Dundee and Livingston.

His form for the Lions and the Fir Park side saw Steve Clarke introduce the no-nonsense defender to the Scotland set up, where he played a part in the historic penalties win over Serbia in November among his seven caps.

But former Australian international McDonald has urged the Parkhead hierarchy to think twice about making a move for him, telling the Celtic Huddle podcast he may not be the answer to Lennon's defensive woes.

He said: “He’s in a struggling Motherwell side just now, obviously you can’t just blame one player, but form is not great at the moment at that football club.

"I think he’s done an excellent job when he’s stepped up to the next level when playing for Scotland. He’s no-nonsense as we know.

"In terms of bringing Celtic to the next level though, that’s questionable for me.

"Certainly someone like Declan Gallagher gets it – he’s been at Celtic before, he’s an avid Celtic fan and he’d be desperate to put the green and white on.

"They want to see people wearing the jersey that mean something to them also. I think Declan Gallagher would be one of them."
