Celtic's clash with Lille forced behind closed doors as Europa League foes dealt curfew blow

Celtic's visit to Lille has been denied fan access after a new French curfew forced the Europa League clash behind closed doors.

Neil Lennon 's side face the Ligue 1 outfit on matchday two this Thursday following a 3-1 opening night defeat to AC Milan.

The Stade Pierre Mauroy holds 50,186 supporters and Lille were hopeful of having a percentage back through the gates.

But French Prime Minister Jean Castex announced an extension to a 9 pm curfew on many cities across France, including Lille after a second wave of Covid-19 cases.

And with the match set for a 6.55pm kick off in local time, Lille have no choice but to close the doors to their own fans for the game.

They stated: "Due to the public health measures taken by the Government last week, Lille can confirm the Europa League match with Celtic will be held behind closed doors.

"The decision is beyond our control because of the curfew set by the Government which covers the local authorities in the Lille metropolitan area.

"Since the match is a 6.55pm KO, the organisation of this event in public would be incompatible with the public respecting the curfew.

"We are immensely frustrated that we won't be allowed to have our supporters experience these great European evenings. The club thanks our supporters for their understanding, their passion and their loyalty during this difficult period."
