Celtic's Callum McGregor backs Neil Lennon to get it right in the summer transfer window

Callum McGregor believes Neil Lennon is the ideal man for a summer rebuild after watching him assemble a title-winning team in his first spell at Celtic.

McGregor was sent out on loan to Notts County in Lennon’s final season in charge and didn’t break into the first team until Ronny Deila’s arrival.

But he was coming through the ranks when Lennon picked up the pieces of the Tony Mowbray era and turned them into league champions.

News of Lennon being offered the Celtic job on a permanent basis broke right after the Hampden win over Hearts.

And McGregor said: “We all jumped on top of him when we heard he’d been offered the job.

“We just heard the news after the game. We put the Cup down, read it and then put the Cup back up again! We’re delighted for him. What a job he’s done and people probably don’t appreciate how well he’s done in terms of bringing stability.

“Guys like Scott Brown, Jonny Hayes and Mikael Lustig have helped as well and if we didn't have so many good characters it could have fallen away and we wouldn’t be standing with the Treble.

“We need some numbers and good quality in the summer to help the lads who have soldiered on the last three months.

When Neil was in charge the first time he took a team of mostly British-based players and got them organised and doing well.

He now has a good core of players and they’ll help him and he’ll help us.”

Lustig looks to have played his final game with the long-serving Swede emotional in a post-match interview.

McGregor added: “He’s a special guy and if it is his last game what a career he had and we have to thank him, he’s one of the Celtic greats.”
