Celtic rocked by positive Covid test after controversial Dubai trip as player misses Hibs clash

Celtic have announced that an unnamed player has tested positive for coronavirus after the controversial trip to Dubai.

Neil Lennon and his squad jetted out to the Middle East for a mid-season training camp and while it was within the rules the choice to travel in a pandemic divided opinion.

Assistant manager John Kennedy admitted there had been "slips" in terms of social distancing, though insisted that the narrative around the trip had been overblown.

All players and staff were tested for Covid-19 on their return to Scotland and Celtic have announced that one swab came back positive.

A statement announced: "Celtic today confirmed that one player has recorded a positive test for covid-19. Clearly the player will receive all our care and full support.

"All other members of our squad, management team and backroom squad are negative."

The player will therefore have to isolate for two weeks and will not be available to face Hibs on Monday night.

Celtic have not named the player concerned and with no other infections the rest of the squad are free to face Jack Ross' side at Parkhead.

It comes after Kennedy conceded his side haven't got everything right but railed against suggestions the Hoops weren't taking their responsibilities seriously.

He said: “There’s been slip-ups with minor things which, if you get a snapshot of something, you can criticise and jump on it.

“We speak to the players as much as we can about the protocols. If there’s any error we try to eradicate that or fix it, and that’s what we did. The photo maybe paints a bleak picture, but we have to move on.

“We had a situation leading into it where we were good to go but while we were there, the latest lockdown came into place. So that looks worse in itself when you’re looking in from afar.”
