Celtic rivals Riga in nervous managerial wait as club boss faces missing Europa League clash

Celtic's Europa League opponents Riga could be without their first team manager for the clash this week.

The Hoops travel to Latvia for their third qualifying round tie of the Europa League, after the Baltic side eventually defeated San Marino minnows Tre Fiori in a match that was delayed.

But they were left stunned before the game when the club's manager, former Spartak Moscow boss, Oleg Kononov returned home to Russia because of undisclosed family reasons.

And they were managed by their assistant manager, Mihals Konevs, instead and it could be the same again against Celtic.

Riga FC admit they don't know whether Kononov will be back for the match against Neil Lennon's side on Thursday.

A club statement said: "We are waiting for the return of Oleg Kononov when it is possible for him to come back.

"Until then, the team will be coached by Mihals Konevs instead."

Kovevs, 57, has twice been manager of Riga FC and returned to the club last year to assist Kononov.

Celtic won 3-2 on Saturday against Livingston thanks to goals from Ryan Christie, Callum McGregor and Albian Ajeti.
