Celtic request to move Rangers game and say they 'owe it to fans' after crowd restrictions

Celtic have officially asked the SPFL to move the winter break forward in light of new restrictions on crowds.

The Scottish Government announced on Tuesday that only 500 people will be allowed to attend matches for a three week period beginning on December 26.

That would include Celtic vs Rangers on January 2, as well as the Edinburgh, Dundee and Ayrshire derbies also scheduled for that Sunday.

The Premiership is scheduled to take a break from January 3 to 21 and it was immediately suggested that could be moved to avoid games being played in an essentially closed door environment.

And Celtic have now confirmed that they've requested the SPFL make the adjustment so fans can attend.

A statement said: "Everyone at Celtic recognises the difficulties presented to society by the current pandemic, and the health and safety of all must always be our priority.

"In light of today’s announcement regarding supporters attending matches, Celtic can confirm that it has today requested that the SPFL bring forward the scheduled winter break and reschedule the fixtures affected by the regulations announced.

"The game owes it to supporters to explore all opportunities to maximise the prospect of all supporters being able to attend matches and support the game they love."
