Celtic receive shock Europa League seeding boost as incredible run of results seals top dog status

Jubilant Celtic's Europa League group stage campaign has received an unlikely boost after an incredible night of results.

Neil Lennon's side needed four teams poised to be top seeds to fall out of the competition to secure their own place in pot one and that's what happened as Copenhagen, Basel, Sporting and Wolfsburg all tripped at the final hurdle.

They had former foes AEK Athens to thank as their come-from- behind win against the Bundesliga side capped off a night of shocks.

That means Celtic will be in pot one for Friday's draw from Nyon alongside the likes of Tottenham and Arsenal – top seeds.

And the Hoops can still secure a showdown with former boss Brendan Rodgers and his Leicester side who will be seeded in pot three.

Celtic were long shots to earn their place among the big-hitters but not have earned a chance for a more favourable draw.

It comes after the Hoops earned a workmanlike 1-0 win against a stodgy Sarajevo side that sat behind the ball on a tense evening in Bosnia.

Odsonne Edouard was below his best but still found the back of the net to secure his side's safe passage into the tournament proper for a third consecutive season.
