Celtic, Rangers and the German football rescue plan that could save cash-strapped Lanarkshire clubs

The top clubs in Germany have unveiled a new financial rescue plan to help cash-strapped clubs survive - which could inspire Scottish sides to follow suit.

The top four Bundesliga clubs Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen have agreed to put over £18million into a rescue pot for struggling sides.

In a statement, Dortmund confirmed the four clubs will initially forego their share of the national media revenue – which has not yet been distributed – from the DFL next season.

The title challengers said:"This amount, which stands at approximately €12.5 million if the current distribution model is applied, will be supplemented by an additional €7.5 million from the quartet’s own reserves."

"The distribution criteria for the €20 million is to be decided by the DFL Executive Committee."

DFL Executive Committee spokesman Christian Seifert added: “This initiative shows that solidarity is more than just lip service in the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2."

With Scottish football also struggling amid the coronavirus crisis, will the teams who went on extended European runs so far this season follow suit and create a much-needed cash pot?

Celtic and Rangers will have a big say (Garry F McHarg Daily Record)

The millions gained from Celtic and Rangers could be a saving grace for clubs fighting for survival in the lower reaches of the national game.

So far in Lanarkshire, top flight sides like Hamilton Accies have admitted it may be tough to safe guard jobs amid the shut down.

Albion Rovers players have offered to differ wages with the League Two strugglers launching a fan fundraiser to keep the club alive.

There are fears at League One promotion hopefuls that their budgets could be severely impacted going forward.

In the junior ranks the impact could be felt even more brutally, with the likes of Blantyre Vics already suspending players wages.
