Celtic ramp up security ahead of Rangers clash as club set to install Parkhead ring of steel

Celtic are erecting extra security fencing at the front of their stadium ahead of next week’s derby against Rangers.

Parkhead chiefs are taking the steps after one of their club shops was damaged last weekend in Glasgow city centre, while there has also been additional activity in recent days around the Billy McNeill statue at the foot of Celtic Way.

It is understood the move is a precautionary measure and a Celtic club spokesman said: “Following the events of last weekend we are enhancing security around the club’s property in the run up to the match.”

The March 21 derby faces some uncertainty amid fears the Scottish Government could order the plug pulled after masses of Rangers fans broke lockdown rules to celebrate their Premiership title win at the weekend.

Fans congregated at Ibrox and George Square, prompting concerns of similar scenes when the two rivals meet at Parkhead in under a fortnight's time.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon revealed this week that talks are set to take place between key stakeholders to decide on any potential action.
